History of the ICTT of Vallarpadam
International container transshipment terminal located at a green blob of Vallarpadam Island is going to be fulcrum of development of the entire state of Kerala. It took nearly two decades to conceive the ICTT terminal which is now closer to the reality. The ICTT is a dream comes true for Kochinites.
ICTT, Vallarpadam would be the largest single-operator container terminal in India. It is also the first terminal in India which will be operated in a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The Vallarpadam terminal and Cochin will be the key center in the shipping world which will almost nullify India’s dependency on foreign ports to handle transshipment.
ICTT is a project is designed with a wide vision and potential to alter the development of the state took quite long time. If we look in the past two decades, Cochin Port trust prepared a preliminary report on Vallarpadam Container Terminal in year 1985. In 1991, the Dutch consultants leashed in to prepare detailed project report. In 1992, the Cochin port trust invited offers to build terminal but no one came forward to take up the project. Later on the same Dutch consultants reworked on the project report for which the first tender was floated in year 1999. Though the Central Government wanted the Port Trust to again look at the proposal and thus the bid was discharged in year 2002. The bid was again invited in the next year and this time two bidders came up with the proposal. The two bidders were CSX World Terminals and Maersk who qualified on the project. However, this proposal did not come through. This year the bid were again came for the Vallarpadam project and eventually DPI was selected as the promoter of the ICTT. And thus the Vallarpadam Container terminal project received a nod from Central Government of India.
The project was launched with laying the foundation stone by Prime Minister on India Manmohan Singh. Governor of Kerala-R.L. Bhatia, Chief Minister of Kerala- Oommen Chandy, Shipping Minister- T.R. Baalu, the chariman of the ICTT project- Thomas Jacob, Executive Chairman Dubai Ports- KoPT and Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem attended the ceremony.
We all hope that there may not be any delays in fulfilling this dream project with a smooth sail.
