In near future it is going to boost up the development of not only Cochin but the entire state Kerala and India too. The project is under construction which will be soon commissioned and expected to be operational in January 2011.

The ICTT project is going to be developed in three phases. The first phase of the terminal is targeted to handle TEUs of 1 million while the second one is designed to tackle TEUs of 1.5 million and the third will be targeted to tackle 3 million TEUs. Hence when the port will be fully constructed and get operated, the total capacity to handle TEUs will be 5.5 million.

The highway to the 'golden quadrilateral' road network and new four-lane bridge is already under construction. Along with this, the Vallarpadam terminal is going to be expanded to total 1.8 km of quay eventually as per the demand. The terminal will be having 16 quay cranes with the capacity to handle largest vessels afloat associated with equipment to handle the yard. The construction will be targeted to handle TEUs with capacity of 3 million.

The total cost approximation to complete the development of the first phase is around US$135 million. While the total cost estimation of the Vallarpadam project is around US$500 million. The funds are provided by Dubai Ports International (DPI) through non-recourse debt funding. Infrastructure Development Fund Company is established to with an intention to provide capital for infrastructure in India has formed a consortium of banks from which debt funds are given to the ICTT project. ICTT Vallarpadam will be in a strong competition with South and Southeast Asian international transshipment ports. As the port is located on the prime location of east-west shipping lanes with the drafts of about 16m, Kochi is on its way to develop as the premier gateway to southern India. It will be an alternative to Sri Lanka and Singapore for heavy container transshipment.
